		Appraisal of Claims
		Stern Hill Gregory Inc. has been engaged as appraisers on disputed business claims. Appraisal, under the terms of the Insurance policy, is similar to arbitration and is limited (unless both parties authorize otherwise) to the value of a loss, not cause or coverage issues. A carrier’s repeated engagement of an appraiser may create a relationship that challenges the appearance of a "disinterested" party. Recent California case law is evolving in this direction and may restrict frequent use of an individual as their nominated appraiser. Because of these trends, many Insurance Companies are expanding their panel of appraisers. We are a member of Insurance Dispute Resolution Center, an organization that provides continuing education and resources for Insurance Appraisers and Umpires.
